5Headset Affordable with Nice Crisp Sound
By Laura Smith
UPDATED REVIEW: Mystery solved. It turns out that the instructions that come with a headset are incorrect. You are supposed to turn the Bluetooth on on your phone, and then press and hold the function button on the headset for about 6 seconds until the LED flashes blue, when what you actually need to do is press and hold the function button on the headset for longer than 6 seconds until the LED flashes blue AND CONTINUE HOLDING THE BUTTON DOWN UNTIL THE HEADSET HAS A NON-FLASHING BLUE LIGHT, after which your phone should see it. Unfortunately, I had returned my first headset and purchased a replacement before I figured this out; I tend to follow instructions to the letter, and I assumed that the instructions were correct and that the unit itself was to blame. Shame on me. :-)ORIGINAL REVIEW: I would love to write a glowing review of this headset, but I can't get the headset paired with my iPhone, or with my boss' Droid. A Google search of the manufacturer didn't get me a contact number for their customer service, so I can't call them to troubleshoot. Now I have to decide whether it's worth returning and getting a new one, or just going to Costco and buying the $50 Bluetooth headset they have there. At Costco, at least I know they will refund my money immediately if it doesn't work. If I find a solution to this, I'll be happy to edit my review.

5Perfect for what they are meant for
By D. Cook
I've read a LOT of reviews on this product and I have to sum up a lot of the negative reviews and comment on them. Too many of the negative comments aren't worth reading because these people didn't take the time to get to know their headset and actually use them in normal circumstances.Overall, I love this headset - it does exactly what it's supposed to do and sounds great. Listening to music, talking on the phone, everything is very clear and loud. I would suggest that people do NOT place a review on a product they used once and returned, and that you don't listen to reviews from people who did that. You can't blame the item if the one you bought was broken, either. This is why I read several reviews of different rankings before I decide on an item. I bought these headphones last summer (about 7 months ago) to work out with at the gym. I did not buy them on Amazon as I had a gift card to a competitor - but I have the exact same headset that is pictured here (with the red highlights near the ear buds, I've read that this means they are the "trainer" version, but they're the exact same headset as the ones with the white/grey highlights that are selling now except for the color of course). Now I'm going to kind of write the rest of this review in reverse - I'm going to write what others are complaining about and make my own comments:1) Fits Poorly - mine fit great and I do not have a small head. I'm a "big and tall" guy and sure, they may be a LITTLE snug but I like that and need that. If they were much looser I'd be worrying about them falling off - people have to take that into account for a product that has a battery in it and has no cords or anything to keep them on your head other than that snugness. Sure - if you have a Charlie Brown head they won't fit, but for everyone else they are fine and may take a little bit of getting used to.2) Sound Quality for Music - I see people complaining about how the sound is poor on their phones or MP3 players, but not many from people saying they looked into their device itself for a solution. One review had the guy comparing these to Beats by Dre headphones - SERIOUSLY? Compare a $70 Bluetooth headset to headphones that are what, $200 minimum and with a wire? Sorry you can't do that. Sure, you can get higher quality music sound from an expensive set of headphones that are only meant for music (and not phone and not wireless), but that's not what these are for. I use an iPhone 4 and they sound great to me. I get bass as well as higher pitches pretty much perfect.3) Sound Quality for Phone - Like above, I've seen mixed reviews based on the phone itself. Search reviews for key words like your phone manufacturer. Again I use mine on an iPhone 4 and it works perfectly, I can skip songs and pause as well as control the volume. I started using these in the car when my car's Bluetooth system (aftermarket item from Parrot I had installed) failed. My girlfriend said I sounded much louder and more clear on these, plus she could no longer hear the regular road noise (tires on the highway) she used to. I have yet to hear a complaint from people I call.4) Sweat Proof - Yes, these things work perfectly against sweat from my experience. I bought these specifically for working out in the gym at first as I wanted to lose weight and would need to listen to music to keep my mind off of how much I hate being at the gym. Like I said before, I'm a big man and this means I sweat a lot while I'm working out. I'm also a head shaver, so the sweat flows unhindered from my head - and I have never had an issue with it. Because they are snug, the headset doesn't slip with the sweat, either. I can understand one or two complaints where they say water got into the headset, but seriously if a lot of people are saying this I have to wonder if they have the proper ear buds in. I use the larger ones, myself - but if you use tiny ones you're lowering the chances of them staying dry. I know several runners that use this headset and they never complain about the sweat in any way.5) Battery Life - I haven't seen many (only a couple) bad reviews on this feature but I thought I'd add it. The battery life on this headset is unbeatable. they make great use of the battery in the back and it doesn't feel like a weight pulling on them at all. The overall weight of the headset is very light actually. I've used this headset to work out for a full week and only charged it on the weekend for months at a time. Now that I'm using it more for phone use, I am charging it more but only every 3 days or so. So, I use them 5 days/week, 3 hours of working out, 7.5 hours of phone time, plus another 4-5 hours of music time at my desk at work and I'm only charging them twice/week. Note though, that when I'm not using them I generally turn the power off to conserve the battery life. The charge time seems to be pretty quick for me as well.6) Bluetooth Connection - Again I haven't seen many negative reviews about this but it needs to be said that this thing pairs FAST once you get it set up (programming in the code per the instructions, which takes 2-3 minutes tops). Now, the trick is to turn Bluetooth on with your phone or other device first, then hold down the power button (center middle of the back/battery area) for a couple of seconds. The second it beeps, it pairs immediately. I've had other devices take up to a minute to pair, but this one is perfect. Also the distance you can be from the phone with this headset is fantastic - I leave the phone in my bag on a seat outside the racquetball court while I am playing and the sound quality is unchanged at large distances. One day I left my phone running in the locker room and went out to the court and did not realize I didn't have my phone with me - that's a floor and about 60 feet away!7) Controls - Really? There are people complaining that the controls are hard for them? There's buttons next to the ear buds and short of having gloves on I can't imagine a reason why anyone would have problems unless they didn't take the time to get used to where the buttons are. They're perfect for me, and I use them now without even thinking about them.In conclusion, these are great headsets of you are using them to work out without wires. They are also great for normal headset use and for cell phone use. They may take some getting used to but what doesn't? Take the time to figure out which ear buds are best for you, learn how to use the controls and use them for a little while before you decide if they are good or not for you.UPDATE: How I got this paired with a Win7 LaptopSo, Microsoft's page says this headset is not compatible with Windows 7, because Win7 doesn't support streaming of sound (bluetooth to them is more for input devices like mice, keyboards, etc). Motorola's pages gives no help for this after extensive searches, so I turned to the web for help because I need to do some training online and didn't want to have a wire going from my ears to the laptop. It was a lot of trouble but I'll give you the steps I took below so hopefully it will work for you as well.1) Download new drivers for your machine:NOTE, my work laptop is a Dell and it already had the latest Win7 drivers installed. After searching on the web I found a driver from Acer that actually worked. I installed these drives:[...] and rebooted my machine, worked like a charm.2) Clear the Headset's Paired ObjectsThis was a tough one to figure out becuase again I couldn't find this trick on the Motorola site. Apparently this headset can only pair to one device at a time (strange), so you need to clear whatever it's paired to first and re-pair it to the new one. To do this, make sure the headset is already ON and not linked to anything (for me, I just had to turn off the bluetooth on my iPhone 4). Then hold down the + button (volume up button, top one on the left ear piece) then hold down the power button on the back of the headset - hold them both down until the blue light comes on and is solid. Now you've cleared the headset of whatever it was already paired to.3) Windows should then automatically see the headsetAt the bottom right of your desktop near the clock, find and click the bluetooth button (blue oval). If you don't see "Motorola S10-HD" with a generic bluetooth headset icon, then click "add a device" and it will search for it. It should have found it automatically though. Personally I never had to type in the connection code, but if you're prompted for it, it's "0000" (all zeroes). That should be it - for me this worked and the only real pain is that I have to go through the procedure again when I'm done using the laptop to re-pair it to my iPhone 4 - but it only takes about 30 seconds each time so no big deal and it's worth it to me. Hopefully this helps you!-Drake

5Great, once you figure out how to fit them correctly.
By S. Power
When I first started using these, I thought I was going to have to return them. They connected easily to my Android phone, and sounded good with Pandora, bTunes, even on phone calls. They even sounded great. The problem was they hurt my outer ears a lot. There was tremendous pressure on the tops of my ears. Obviously, I tried to adjust the fit, in accordance with the directions and the picture on the Motorola website of someone wearing them. Nothing seemed to work. Today, after running 7 miles in them, I decided to return them. 10 minutes later, I realized that the part that was hitting the top of my ears was supposed to go behind the ears. They now feel great, and I'll definitely be keeping them. They even sound better when worn correctly. Before you discount what I'm saying, or assume that I'm a complete moron for not knowing how to wear headphones, be warned that the directions for wearing them, and the picture on the Motorola website imply that you are supposed to wear them incorrectly. Now that I'm wearing them correctly, here are the things they do well:+ Sound Great+ Connect easily+ Switch between calls and music seamlessly+ Feel comfortable, though they are quite a bit heavier than any other headphones, even the older Motorlas (S-9 and S9-HD)+ Very well made.+ The battery life is exceptional and you can charge it off micro-USB.The owner's manual is pretty much useless. The format is tiny, and they put more effort into being hip than providing a useful manual for the product. Fortunately, it is intuitive to use.The price on these is reasonable, considering what you get and what it can do. I bought mine at Best Buy because Amazon didn't have them yet, and the third party sellers that have them on here are kind of pricey.I highly recommend that you buy these. I think that you will love them, once you figure out how to fit them.//update August 24th, 2011 //After having these for a year, I decided to buy another pair to see if they have changed at all. They have but only cosmetically. Although the old ones continue to work well, the second generation of these has some slight changes. One of the many things that hasn't changed is the model number and name. The way to tell the second generation from the first is that the white material that touches your head next to your ears is now red. Also the black plastic on the back/top of them is shiny instead of muted. The performance seems to be the same with the new ones as the old ones, though the buttons are a little easier to operate and the battery life appears to be longer.

I bought mine at Best Buy because Amazon didn't have them yet, and the third party sellers that have them on here are kind of pricey. --- Update on pricing, May 14th, 2011: The price on Amazon quickly became the best deal around, once they had them. My comments about Best Buy and 3rd party sellers being better was only true for the first month that they were out.I highly recommend that you buy these. I think that you will love them, once you figure out how to fit them.UPDATE - January 9th, 2011 - UPDATEI am still loving these after months of very heavy and sweaty use. They work and sound great. I am posting this update, because I recently bought a Giro G9 Ski and Snowboard helmet and was about to buy the Bluetooth inserts for it. After a bunch of research about how badly the various inserts work, I decided to try wearing the S10-HDs with my helmet. To my amazement it fit and worked perfectly, saving me a lot of money, and providing me an experience that is much better than the alternatives.UPDATE - May 14th, 2011 - UPDATEI have been using these for almost a year now and still love them. I don't really understand the negative reviews, unless Motorola has an inconsistent build quality and some people are getting lemons. Please let me update you on a few aspects of my experience:Sweat-proof/rainproof - I run in these every day. They are covered in sweat by the time I get home every time. Despite being wet with sweat or rain for long periods of time daily, I've never had a problem with them. I can't explain why so many other reviewers are.Sound quality - I am not a sound aficionado though I can tell when headphones don't sound right though. To an average listener, these headphones sound fine. To me, they sound just as good as my Bose QC-1.5s though that is probably more because of my unrefined average ear, than to them really being "Bose Quality". My point is not to get discouraged by the reviews that complain about the audio quality, unless you are one of the small percentage of people that can tell between good and great headphones. I can't.Fit - The fit on these is fine. Even worn correctly, they do become uncomfortable after a few hours, but most headphones do. The fit thing I like about these is their versatility. I wear them mowing the lawn, under Remington shooting hearing protection, skiing, with a Giro ski helmet, and cycling, under a bike helmet. By being able to fit in all these different applications, they've saved me from having to consider buying inferior specialty headphones. After almost a year, I still highly recommend these headphone.

2Did not work for my Samsung GalaxyS phone
By Dub
I ordered this device because it was specifically designed for my phone. When I received the product I tried numerous times to sync and it would not sync to my phone. I planned on returning the item but never got around to it and now I'm stuck with this wishing I should have purchased something else. I've never sold anything on Amazon, but I'll try to put this one on the market as I'm not satisfied with it. Maybe it'll work with someone elses phone but not mine.

4Great headset but all the fancy extras are through Vocalyst. There are some issues with that.
By atmj
I have a lot to say, so those of you that want the short version here it is. Mind you this is my first pass over a few days of usage.SUMMARY:PROS:1. Extremely comfortable secure headset2. Quick and simple pairing3. Great sound quality (my 4th headset so I know the difference)4. Nice voice prompts for pairing, turning on, connecting, accepting calls and battery life.CONS:1. Since Vocalyst is a phone call it burns minutes.2. Voice pairing instructions were wrong, but if you have done this before, it is simple enough.3. Vocalyst service seems convoluted (you have to call them to do anything) and at this time nothing seems really worth it.4. Sending an email via Vocalyst sends a voice email. I wanted text.5. Sending Texts are a Pro level feature that costs extra bucks ($35-$59/year). I don't know if they are voice texts or text ones. Assume Voice.5. Could not find the "MyHeadset" app in Marketplace, so I could not test that. Am I too soon? Will update if I am.6. Mute means the headset is muted, not the cell phone itself.EARPIECE COMFORT AND SECURITYFor me this was the most secure and comfortable earpiece I have worn yet. The soft nylon fits on the inside of your ear near the outside and a little plastic ring scoops onto the ridge of your outer ear. No pain and I shook my head around and let my hair fall near it. It did not budge. This usually launches most ear pieces and I end up resorting to an over the ear clip, which conflicts with my eyeglass arm. Love it.PAIRINGIt is true that the headset walks you through pairing. First is asks you whether you have Android or iphone. Then you get each step and it waits for you to press the button. However the instructions for my Android phone were wrong. It told me to go to Settings and look for the General list...Too bad my settings for Bluetooth were under Wireless & Networks. The rest of the menu info was equally useless, but it did tell me the correct headset name once I started searching. It also talked when it was found and paired. I like that it tells that it's on and when a connection is made, when you get a call, etc.CALL QUALITYMy first two days so almost too soon to tell. I will update this if there are issues, but often, you find them out pretty quick. Mind you one of these phone calls were accidental, but I'm not sure if that was the head set or me. This time at least it was not my supervisor at 11:30 PM. That was when when I got the new Android phone....Sheesh.I do like the fact when you put on the headset it tells you how many hours of talk time you have...5 hours is pretty good. Even I can't talk that much.SETTING UP VOCALYSTSince you have to type in your data, I found this easier to do online than on my phone. Once done, I got a confirmation email but when I tried to use it, it said I was not set up yet...so much for email confirmations. Whoops my bad... typed in the wrong number. I'm including this stupidity here as I did find the solution on their FAQ page. Mind you, I was too sure to check before and had just assumed the problem was on their side. For some reason also I could not get it to accept my yahoo email, but it worked with my gmail email. Yes, I double checked and retried it.Having used Vocalyst now, I'm not impressed. I don't like the idea of calling them to use these services. I guess I envisioned these services available on the phone. Maybe I'm being parochial, but we will see over time how much I use these. Another thing is since this is a phone call rather than access to my phone and data services, I'm burning minutes. Since like everyone else my phone minutes are limited, this is not a plus.HAD SOME MINOR ISSUES GETTING UNDERSTOODFirst I had issues getting my voiced recognized. Shouting when it does not understand you, though satisfying, is counter-productive. Once I got it to work, and then added email contacts, I found out, you have to close the browser and reopen before the added email contacts are found on the other side. I kept trying to send an email and it kept telling me I had no contacts, though it clearly showed two on my list.SENDING AN EMAIL EMBEDS A VOICE MAIL INTO AN EMAILNext when I started an email, I was not sure how to stop. I think I went through a variety of words before I got it. Mind you the person receiving this also heard all of this as well. Yes, heard...It send a sound file embedded in an email. If the person reading it had no ability to listen, it was pointless. I guess I expected it to convert it to text. This defeats most of the utility of this feature to me. As sending a text is part of the Pro features, I won't be demoing that.LISTEN TO EMAIL IS NOT RELAXINGLater I listened to my email and that was intense. I'm not much of a verbal person. I did notice that it spoke very quickly and when it was relaying phone numbers in the email, it almost felt like I was being yelled at. No thank you.Since I have listened to News and Weather. Unlike the radio, the computer generated speech struck me as abrupt and rushed. I found myself tensing.VOCALYST IS ONLY FREE FOR FIRST YEAR On the packaging it says:* Vocalyst voice service*That little important * means that Vocalyst has fees associated. For the first year, the basic service is free. The 2nd year is listed as $2.49/month, or $24.99/yr.This means you can:* Record and listen to a reminder* Send and receive emails* Listen to a news, finance, weather or sports feed* Post to Facebook or Twitter* Listen to your Twitter timeline* Post to your Evernote accountThe pro plan if you sign up now is $3.50/month or $35.00/yr. Or if you wait $5.00/month or $59.99/year.This gives you in addition to the above some important extras* Listen to your calendar and add appointments* Post to a number of blogs* Send a text message to a phone contact-you notice that is a premium service???CALL MUTEGoofing around with some of the controls I noted that when I use the mute option, it muted the headset but it did not seem to disable the handset microphone. I have verified this twice. I don't know if that is typical, but certainly not the way I would expect it to work. What good is a mute button that does not close both microphones?PACKAGINGThe packaging was wonderful. So often you nearly destroy the thing you purchased to get it out of the container. Not this headset. Packaging was well done. Cut the tape, pinch the top and it slides out. Then inside there was a nice little clamshell package that held the instructions and spare earpieces. Nice that you can keep this to store the stuff. I always ended up using a baggie afterward. The headset was well protected and on display in a structurally sound little clipped plastic mount. Took a moment to free it, but you know it didn't get mishandled carrying home.

3Sleek, but needs work
By Grimmy
It has a nice, slim look. The earpiece stays in my ear without the hook, but YMMV.Power button is easy to access. Pairing is guided by voice prompts. The Volume button - there's only one - is a little hard to press, though. And it cycles. If you're at the lowest volume and you press the "lower volume" button, it cycles back to the loudest. And vice-versa. So if you want a lower volume, you'll have to pass through the higher ones first. Annoying. Also, the lowest volume setting is still pretty loud - a little too loud for me.You're supposed to be able to answer or ignore calls by saying "answer" or "ignore." However, it had trouble recognizing my command. Initially I had to speak up quite loudly for it to finally obey. But it worked OK a couple of days later. It varies with your surrounding noise. The command button is on the stiff side - pressing it while on your ear may be uncomfortable. Better to use your fingernail rather than trying to press with your fingertip - less force needed that way.Comes with a wall charger, and cell phone app that shows battery status. Battery status is also announced when you power it on. Nice!Plantronics offers the Vocalyst service that lets you send emails, send yourself email reminders, listen to your inbox, Twitter & FaceBook, listen to news feeds, etc. The Pro version lets you send texts, use ToodleDo, 30 Boxes, post blog entries using speech-to-text, etc. You get 1 year of Vocalyst Basic free with a code included with the device; after that, it's $24.99 for Basic per year, or $59.99 for Pro per year, with slightly higher monthly rates available. I'll add impressions after trying it out a bit. If it works as advertised, the prices are reasonable. But due to the trouble it had recognizing "answer", I'm skeptical. Also, the free version may not convert speech to text - hard to tell from their site. If so, this is a serious mistake - who wants to pay to try out the service to see if it works?PROS:SleekStays on the ear (depends on your ear size, though)Different-sized earpieces and hook includedWall chargerVoice answer/ignoreBattery status indicator via cell phone appVoice notification of battery life - nice!Potentially powerful Vocalyst capabilities - 1 year basic serviceCONS:Voice answer/ignore is iffy - may need loud voiceMultifunction button is hard to press with fingertip (UPDATE: OK with fingernail)Volume button hard to pressVolume settings cycle instead of letting you go louder/softer immediately

5Great little set
By T. Knox
I have a few other Plantronics headsets, which is probably why this one showed up for review. I use a Voyager Pro+ and a wireless telephone headset for long teleconferences. Both of those have outstanding audio quality and comfort. This headset is incredibly small and compact compared to my other ones, is easy to wear for a few hours, and is really a better product if you are in a quiet environment like your house or office. This is not the thing to use in the car with the top down or walking outside if there is a breeze. You also want to avoid this product if there is a lot of background noise because the mic really is a long way from your mouth. .I called a few people to ask about the sound quality and while all agreed that I sounded a bit like I was at the bottom of a well, the sound quality wasn't noticeably bad, which is probably the best that can be expected from a little gizmo like this.Unpacking and set-up were a breeze. There are two little tapes on the top of the package that you pull and the the guts of the carton just come out the top. The packaging is really top notch. Once you free the ear piece, turn it on and stick it in your ear, just follow the audible instructions if you have an iPhone or Android. If you happen to have an Android phone, there is apparently an app that does some cool things, but I have an iPhone, so I wasn't able to try it. I can't comment on the battery life, but it has survived a few hour long teleconferences without issue.Overall, this is a nice little gadget, and if Amazon wanted it back, it's likely that I would buy one to replace it. I imagine that I will be buying one for my wife in any case.
